The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually. The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

The nursing assistant position requires flexibility of assignment to meet facility needs. Incumbents in this position are responsible for patient care, to include assisting patients with ADLS, hygiene care, vital signs, glucometer testing, patient turning and repositioning, providing close observation, assisting with meals and hydration, transporting, and other duties needed to support Veteran Care. This is an active general medical and surgical medical center with a large ambulatory care program and an extensive research and professional training program affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. The incumbent assigned to this position is a member of the Nursing team. He/she is assigned by licensed personnel to care for the patients by taking vital signs, collecting specimens, performing EKG's, assisting with transport, and providing dressing changes, and usual daily activities to include bathing, linen changes, assistance with feeding patients and post-mortem care. Incumbent has skill and knowledge as well as understanding the therapeutic aspect of the nursing assistant patient relationships and has been educated to recognize the importance of dealing with medical-surgical issues and complications. The issues are physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural. He/she assumes responsibility for patients who may be physically or emotionally unable to communicate their needs and who require skilled care. Incumbent has knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in policies and procedures. Incumbent practices good customer service in all work activities. This includes such actions as treating all customers with courtesy and fairness; considering the impact of work decisions on customers; and incorporating customer feedback in job and work modifications. Good customer service must be the central theme of all work-related activities. The incumbent bathes patients and changes bed linens. Adjusts the patient's position and provides pillows and blankets for comfort; turns and repositions patient per turning schedule as needed. Prepares patient for transport; adjusts the patient's position and provides pillows and blankets for comfort and ease of transport. Fills water pitchers, measures and records vital signs, intake and outputs, and other body measurements, such as weights. Performs mouth, eye, and nose care as needed, giving special attention to details of care since patients are often too ill to provide this care, or to provided gestures or speak. Observes patients for change in condition and report these changes to RN. Incumbent observes patients for changes in condition (color, respirations, drainage, level of consciousness, etc.) and reports them immediately to the charge nurse or the person in charge of the area. Sits with suicidal patients and other patients requiring 1:1 observation and care. Properly collects specimens and assures proper labeling and security of lids and bagging in biohazard bag before sending for processing. Ensures the responsible person is aware of patient's and/or specimen's arrival before leaving the unit. Assures that patients arrive at designated areas for tests and/or treatments on time. Transports and remains with patients when sent to other departments within the facility. Report and record significant data on proper forms. Participates in medical center and/or unit performance improvement activities.
**Work Schedule:** 8 hour tours 7a-3:30p; 3p-11:30p; 11p-7:30a determined at time of hire dependent on unit patient care needs.

### QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
a. **Citizenship.**Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
b. **Education or Training.**One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
c. **Physical Requirements.**See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
d. **English Language Proficiency.**NAs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
**GS-5 NA** **(Full Performance Level)**
(a) **Experience.**One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below;
(b) **Education.**Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND
(c) **Demonstrated KSAs**
1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
(d) **Assignment.**This is the full performance level for NAs. NAs at this grade level function as a member of the nursing care team and assist licensed nursing staff in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care or other patients/residents who are in acute, sub-acute or chronic states of illness. The distinguishing factor is that patient/resident assignments typically involve more complex nursing needs which can vary within a range of predictable to unpredictable requirements. NAs at this level also assume more of a peer education/mentorship role.
