Tracking Code 589 Job Description Cornell Hillel's Yudowitz Center for Jewish Campus Life, one of the nation's premier Hillels, seeks anExecutive Directorwho will work in partnership with students, staff, alumni and the Board of Trustees to strengthen and sustain a meaningful, vibrant, and pluralistic Jewish campus community. The ideal leader will bring extensive experience in organizational strategic planning and management as well as passion for Jewish living and a commitment to pluralistic Jewish expression. Cornell University is one of the world's foremost institutions of higher education, with seven undergraduate schools and five graduate schools located in Ithaca, NY. in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York State. Cornell Hillel is housed in Anabel Taylor Hall, home of Cornell United Religious Works. Jewish students make up approximately one-quarter of the student body on the Ithaca campus, or some 3,500 students. Cornell Hillel employs a large professional team, including two rabbis, two program associates, a director of advancement, and administrative staff. The Executive Director is responsible for leading the staff and for charting the financial path and operational success of the organization that includes partnering with the Board of Trustees, spearheading financial campaigns, communicating with the University administration, and strengthening community ties. Cornell Hillel has an operating budget of more than $800,000 and recently established a multi-million dollar program endowment in concert with the University. About Cornell Hillel:
Cornell Hillel sponsors more than 25 student organizations under the umbrella of the Jewish Student Union, and has one of the largest student-allocated program budgets within Hillel. Cornell regularly sends one of the largest birthright Israel contingents to Israel, and is recognized by AIPAC for its program supporting the State of Israel. Cornell Hillel sponsors Shabbat services every week, and supervises religious observance for the High Holidays, Passover and other occasions. Cornell is home to an annual Hillel Freshman barbeque in August, the Shabbat 1000 dinner in the fall, and hundreds of Hillel programs each academic year. Cornell Hillel and the Muslim Educational and Cultural Association were co-recipients of the University's Perkins Prize for Interracial Understanding and Harmony, and Hillel has done joint programs with many other groups on campus, including Indian, Iranian and Black student organizations. One annual highlight is Sepharadi Persian Night, sponsored by the Sepharadi-Mizrachi Association at Cornell (SMAC) and Iranian Students Organization, featuring Kosher-Hallel Middle Eastern Food and entertainment. In the 2009-2010 academic year, Cornell Hillel will be a participant in The Peer-Network Engagement Internship. PNEI is designed to enhance Jewish life on campus. The Executive Director implements Hillel's mission of creating a pluralistic, welcoming and inclusive environment for Jewish college students, where they are encouraged to grow intellectually, spiritually and socially. Working closely with students, lay leaders, faculty, staff and administration, the Executive Director provides strategic vision, leadership, and managerial oversight for Cornell Hillel. Additionally, the Executive Director provides fiscal oversight, staff management, community relations, board and financial resource development, and is ultimately responsible for ensuring that Cornel Hillel is an energetic enterprise that functions as the focal point for Jewish student life at Cornell University. Strategic Planning, Vision and Leadership . Develop, articulate and promote a dynamic and innovative vision for Jewish life at Cornell in partnership with key stakeholders, including students, Board of Trustees, alumni, parents, staff and Hillel's International Center. . Demonstrate effective leadership while developing and implementing the strategies and structures needed to execute that vision. . Infuse creativity and collaboration into planning and implementation. . Manage programs and projects to ensure effective and efficient internal operations and external affairs. Student Engagement . Facilitate pluralistic Jewish programming on campus, engaging with and encouraging students to develop meaningful Jewish journeys and experiences. . Ensure all programming is innovative and imbued with Jewish content. . Develop leadership skills of students and empower them to create and implement their own Jewish programming on campus. . Work cross-denominationally to encourage and promote an inclusive approach to religious expression through holiday and Shabbat observances, Jewish learning and other related experiences. . Work with the university and stakeholders to ensure the provision of kosher food on campus. . Ensure that multiple points of entry to and involvement in Jewish life thrive. Board of Trustees . Engage and proactively utilize dedicated lay leaders committed to Cornell Hillel's mission and vision . Ensure the growth and continued viability of the Board of Trustees by effectively interacting with the Board and identifying and recommending new Trustees. . Work with Board of Trustees committees to implement the strategic vision for Cornell Hillel. . Provide Board of Trustees with the information they require to make informed decisions. . Strengthen ongoing relationships with Trustees . Provide opportunities for Trustee interaction with students, young alumni, administration and others interested in the furtherance of Jewish campus life. Financial Resource Development and Management . In close coordination with the Board of Trustees, develop and implement a strategic approach to financial resource development and management to sustain Cornell Hillel's operations. . In conjunction with the Development Director and Development Committee, spearhead development activities, including major gifts cultivation, planned giving efforts and face to face solicitation. . In conjunction with the Development Director and Development Committee, spearhead a re-envisioning of an endowment campaign strategy and effort. . Manage application to and stewardship of foundations for grant support. Financial Resource Management . Oversee and manage the fiscal operation of Hillel through budget planning and management processes. . Oversee the preparation of budget presentations and reports for the Cornell Hillel Board of Trustees, The Schusterman International Center, and other appropriate funding sources. . Develop strategies to ensure cost effectiveness, efficiency and savings. Human Resource Management . Manage and develop the strategic framework for effective HR practices, structures and systems. . Oversee the supervision, performance evaluation, and ongoing professional development of the Cornell Hillel staff. . Implement goals and values for staff retention and continuity. . Provide opportunities for continuing professional training, growth and education. . Plan and facilitate strategic retreats and team-building programs for the Cornell Hillel Staff. . Provide ongoing supervision for all of Cornell Hillel's staff (direct reports), including annual goal setting and midyear and year end performance evaluations. . Ensure that all staff attends the appropriate Hillel conferences and training opportunities. Communications and Marketing . Provide leadership in marketing, public relations and promotional activities both within the Cornell and Hillel communities and beyond. . Build and maintain strong relationships with students, the University, parents, alumni, and donors. . Demonstrate strong public speaking and presentation skills to connect with multiple audiences. Community Relations . Overall responsibility for the strategic relationships with Cornell University, on behalf of Cornell Hillel, so that Cornell Hillel is an indispensable partner of the University. . Serve as the representative of the Jewish community on campus, and promote awareness of campus-based needs and issues in the local Jewish community. . Advocate on behalf of Jewish students and Jewish interests, and utilize appropriate organizational resources in the Jewish community. . Develop appropriate university and community relationships, both formal and informal, to ensure that Hillel can respond appropriately and effectively to relevant events and developments which impact Jewish students and the Jewish community. . Work cooperatively with Jewish Studies/Near Eastern Studies and other appropriate departments to strengthen Jewish campus life. Qualifications:

The Executive Director position involves extensive travel between Ithaca and New York City, to other domestic cities with concentrations of Jewish alumni and donors, and, in leading student trips, to Israel and other foreign destinations.
