Mountain Empire Community CollegeBig Stone Gap, Virginia The Virginia Community College System invites applications and nominations for the President of Mountain Empire Community College. The college is located in the Appalachian Mountains of western Virginia, adjacent to Kentucky and Tennessee. This scenic rural area has a rich heritage of mountain crafts, music and food that comes to life each October at Home Craft Days. The Mountain Music School brings together students of all ages each summer for a week of learning, music, and fun to preserve the area's music tradition. The Goodloe Center, a multiple purpose facility for college and community use, is also the setting for diverse cultural and musical events throughout the year. Mountain Empire is a comprehensive community college serving the residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson Counties and the City of Norton. The college was founded in 1972 and now has an annualized headcount enrollment of approximately 4,440 students and 1,932 FTEs during the 2008-09 academic year. Dual enrollment students comprised 21 percent of the headcount. MECC also has a close working relationship with the five public school systems and the four-year college (UVA-Wise) located within the service region. The operating budget is approximately $13 million, and its Educational Foundation has assets over $8 million. The college offers programs leading to the associate degree, certificate, and career studies certificate through the Arts & Sciences, Business & Information Technology, and Health Science & Industrial Technology divisions. The College delivers credit and non-credit course offerings through the Center for Workforce Development. Mountain Empire is a community-minded and student-centered college where faculty and staff genuinely care, and are concerned about the success of each student. This environment demands a leader who is engaged, accessible, who can build positive relationships with all constituencies, and who can serve as an effective advocate for the region. The next president is expected to continue college success in enrollment growth while improving student retention and graduation. Expanding academic programs that are designed to meet the unique needs of the region, expanding the use of technology, and securing additional public and private funding for college will also be high priorities in the coming years. Qualified candidates will have an earned doctorate and demonstrated successful senior executive experience at the highest levels. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities and other appropriate administrative duties.
