Our bureau office is located north of Austin in Round Rock, Texas. The job will require developing the beat, contacts, and news sources; representing News 8 within the community; reporting, shooting, writing, and editing stories; enterprising stories and following on-going stories; covering breaking news; working with the assignment desk, and news managers. This position also field anchors as necessary. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Develops and maintains beats, contacts and news sources within Bureau's region. The Williamson Bureau covers all of Williamson County including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, and Lago Vista. * Enterprises stories:
follows continuing stories within region. Works with news managers to assure stories representative of the region (both in term of geography and subject matter) are completed in a timely manner. Looks for opportunities to cover news and events within region live. Participates in editorial planning meetings and pitches story ideas daily. When appropriate, requests additional personnel to cover news of the day within region. * Is first-response to breaking news within region; field anchors breaking news coverage. * Maintains a strong understanding of local and national news and issues of the day reading newspapers and monitoring competition. Maintains a strong familiarity all key local newsmakers. * Contributes ideas for news stories to enhance the overall quality of the news products. * Develops appropriate knowledge of newsroom computer and automation systems. * Represents News 8 and, when appropriate, Time Warner Cable within the region's communities. * Maintains appropriate visibility within the community. * Works as a VJ to bring stories to air:
- Gathers information for stories, using beat sources, contacts and leads. - Reports, shoots, writes, edits news stories, and composes graphics within assigned deadlines. Stories should be compelling, factually correct, creative, and written in a clear, concise conversational manner. Will primarily work alone to report and shoot stories. - Delivers reports, including live reports and breaking news coverage, demonstrating energy, confidence, professional appearance, and voice quality. - Combines video, audio, and graphics to effectively tell the story. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree with one year professional experience preferred. Excellent writing skills and interpersonal skills. Strong on-camera skills with the ability to ad-lib effectively and work under time pressure deadlines. Strong computer skills and willingness to work different shifts. Ability to develop professional and productive relationships with public officials and news makers. REQUIREMENTS * Required to live in Williamson County. * Lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds. * Works inside and outside throughout the year and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions. * Must be flexible to work weekends, evenings, and holidays when required. * Must have a valid Driver's License and good driving record. * On-call 24/7.
